How
to Wisely Cultivate Prayer
In
the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee.
King David
The
entire day receives order and discipline when it acquires unity.
This unity must be sought and found in morning prayer. The morning
prayer determines the day.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
He
who runs from God in the morning will scarcely find Him the rest
of the day.
John Bunyan
Like
in farming, there are cycles and season during the process of growth.
Timing is essential.
The
most critical time for prayer is in the morning. Begin
your day with prayer and cultivating a wise thought within your heart,
mind and soul. There's no better time for it.
Your
morning is a 'high leverage moment'. It's capable of
creating maximum results for minimal effort. Therefore,
do then what all wise men and women do, - PRAY. The morning prayer
will positively set up your entire day!
(In
'a course
in Prayer', I'll talk extensively about establishing a Morning
Power Ritual. If you have not participated in this program yet,
please sign up. It is a profound 7 day multimedia course for deepening
your relationship with God and His blessings, - and it's free.)
The
man who says his prayers in the evening is a captain posting his
sentries.
After that, he can sleep.
Charles Baudelaire
Prayer
is the key of the morning and the bolt of the evening.
Mahatma Gandhi
Start and end your day with prayer. Turn to God like a child.
Persevere in daily prayer. It stretches the heart, which in turn
opens itself up to God, and God offers Himself to us as a gift."
Mother Teresa
The
second most important time for prayer is in the evening.
The
evening prayer balances the morning one. As a 'beginning' also
presupposes an ending, a consummation, an achievement or goal, - the
evening prayer ties together a day that is spent in the intention
to be united with God. Together, the morning and evening prayer
'frame the day'.
Bring
a great conclusion to your day by praying, reading the wise
words of spiritual teacher, reflecting on their ideas... etc.
It
is important to pray in the evenings for it allows your mind to
rest upon elevated thoughts. It is during the night that your
subconscious mind neurologically links up the ideas of the day,
and stores them in your mind to better serve you. As research
has shown, the events you engage in prior to retiring, - are best
memorized, and they define the quality of sleep you have.
As the proverb states, 'In the morning, prayer is the key that opens
to us the treasures of God's mercies and blessings; in the evening,
it is the key that shuts us up under His protection and safeguard'.
These are the two most important moments in your day.
Prayer,
makes these moments transformational.
These
simple habits of praying in the morning and evening, will
make a massive difference in your state of being, your attitude
and the results you'll create.
This
is like daily watering seeds of Greatness.
The
quiet hour of prayer is one of the most favorable opportunities
He has,
in which to speak to us seriously.

The
other aspect of wise cultivation is the process of 'deep root
nourishment.'
To
really connect with God and be fundamentally changed from the inside
out, - take one day of the week to really 'saturate' your body,
mind and soul in divine thoughts. Once a week, - preferably
on the holy day of Sunday, - spend a holy hour in God's
presence.
This
act of 'immersion in prayer' affects you at a whole new level.
You will experience deeply and personally God's
presence in your life. Through Love, Truth, Beauty and
Freedom, you can permanently expand your character and fulfillment
you find in life - far, far, far beyond what any drug or worldy experience
can offer. As the poet Oliver Wendell Holmes put
it, 'once a mind is expanded by a new idea, it never returns again
to its original dimension.'
The
time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer,
and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons
are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God
as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament.
Brother Lawrence
Constant
prayer quickly straightens out our thoughts.
The Desert Fathers
Remember
that you can pray any time, anywhere. Washing dishes, digging ditches,
working in the office, in the shop, on the athletic field, even
in prison -- you can pray and know God hears! Avail yourself of
the greatest privilege this side of heaven.
Billy Graham
And
the ultimate way to experience this permanent transformation,
is to take 40 days out for prayer. This
will help you irreversibly expand your mind for the better. It
has been the secret to all the spiritual Greats - from Moses to Jesus,
to Mohammad, to Buddha...
A
wonderful and powerful thing happens when you choose this.
Once
you have habituated these prayer practices over a period of 40 days,
you'll notice that it becomes very natural to extend these moments
beyond their formalized periods... You'll begin to insert these 'parentheses
of power' in many hours of the day, and to make each moment 'brilliant'!
According
to Jesus, if you sow and cultivate Godly Words in good soil, - you
ought to expect a return on investment of a hundred, sixty or thirty
times what you have sown. (see Matthew 13:8) As God Himself
has designed this system, - it is as accurate as any of His
scientific laws.
If
you are willing to obey his laws, you can have a hundred fold
return on the time and resources that you have invested with!
Now,
that is the highest yielding investment anywhere isn't it?
